Passphrase Generator

Choose how many words you want and the tool makes random passphrases with your browser's secure random source. Entropy in bits is shown for each setting.

What is passphrase generator?

A passphrase is a password made of several random words. It is much easier to remember than a string of symbols, and the length makes it strong.

The generator picks words from a list using the secure random source in your browser. Nothing is sent or stored, and you can tune the length and style.

How to use the passphrase generator

  1. Choose the number of words and the separator.
  2. Tick capitals or a number if a site requires them.
  3. Press Generate and copy a passphrase.

How the passphrase generator works

Each word is chosen at random from a list of several hundred words. Strength in bits equals the number of words times log base 2 of the list size, plus the bits of the optional number.

Worked example

Four random words from a 343 word list give about 34 bits, and adding a number gives about 40 bits. Six words give about 50 bits.

Common uses of the passphrase generator

  • Creating a master password.
  • Wifi passwords that guests can type.
  • Disk encryption passwords.
  • Account recovery phrases for non critical sites.
  • Teaching password strength.

Tips and common mistakes

Use five or six words for a master password.

Use a password manager for everything else and never reuse a passphrase.

Background: what to know before you rely on it

Password strength comes from unpredictability, not from odd symbols. A random four word phrase is harder to guess than a typical eight character password with a symbol, and far easier to remember. The key word is random: people choose words in patterns that attackers can model. Using a generator removes that weakness. A passphrase protects you only if it is unique to one account, so pair it with a password manager and two factor authentication where possible.

Private, free and fast

This tool runs entirely in your browser. What you type or choose is not uploaded to a server and is not saved after you close the page, which keeps it fast and private. It is free to use as often as you like. See more in all generators, or browse the full list of tools.

Frequently asked questions

Are passphrases safe?

Yes, if the words are chosen randomly. Phrases from a song or a quote are not safe.

How many words do I need?

Four for ordinary accounts, six or more for high value ones.

Is anything stored?

No. It is generated in your browser.

Why a small word list?

A short list keeps words easy to type. The tool shows the strength so you can add words to compensate.
