Video Compressor

Choose a video, a resolution and a quality level. Your browser re encodes the video and gives a smaller file. It takes about as long as the video plays.

Please note: Compression runs while the video plays, so a 5 minute clip takes about 5 minutes. Keep this tab open and visible. Use a computer with Chrome or Edge for the best result.

What is video compressor?

Big videos are hard to send by email or chat, and they use a lot of storage. Lowering the resolution and bitrate can cut the size by more than half with little visible loss on a phone screen.

This tool needs no software or upload. Your browser plays the video, draws each frame at the new size and records it again at the chosen bitrate.

How to use the video compressor

  1. Choose your video file.
  2. Pick the maximum resolution and the quality.
  3. Press Compress video, keep the tab open, then download the result.

How the video compressor works

The video is played in a hidden player. Each frame is drawn on a canvas at the new size and recorded with the browser's media recorder at your chosen bitrate. The audio is recorded at 96 kbps. The result is a WebM file, or MP4 in browsers that support it.

Worked example

A 100 MB clip of 1080p video at 800 kbps can become about 15 MB at 720p, depending on its length.

Common uses of the video compressor

  • Sending a video by email or WhatsApp.
  • Uploading to a site with a size limit.
  • Saving phone storage.
  • Preparing course clips.
  • Sharing screen recordings.

Tips and common mistakes

For social media, 720p at a balanced setting is enough.

Do not switch tabs while compressing, because browsers slow down hidden tabs.

Background: what to know before you rely on it

Video size is mainly bitrate times length. A bitrate of 800 kilobits per second uses about 6 megabytes per minute, while a high quality phone clip can use over 100 megabytes per minute. Resolution matters because more pixels need more bits to look sharp. Professional tools such as FFmpeg encode faster than real time and offer better control, but they need installation. A browser based approach trades speed for convenience and privacy. For long or critical videos, use a desktop encoder.
