Text to Binary Converter

Type text to get its binary or hexadecimal code, or paste binary or hex to read the text. It uses UTF8, so letters, symbols and emoji work.

What is text to binary converter?

Computers store text as numbers, and each number as a pattern of zeros and ones. This converter shows that hidden layer: every character becomes one or more bytes, written in binary or in hexadecimal.

It also works backwards, so you can decode binary strings from a puzzle, a class exercise or a data file.

How to use the text to binary converter

  1. Choose the conversion direction.
  2. Paste your text, binary or hex.
  3. Copy the result.

How the text to binary converter works

The text is encoded as UTF8 bytes. Each byte is shown as eight binary digits or two hexadecimal digits. To decode, the groups are turned back into bytes and read as UTF8 text.

Worked example

The text Hi is the bytes 72 and 105. In binary that is 01001000 01101001. In hex it is 48 69.

Common uses of the text to binary converter

  • Learning how computers store text.
  • Solving binary puzzles.
  • Debugging encoding problems.
  • Preparing classroom examples.
  • Checking the bytes of a string.

Tips and common mistakes

Separate binary groups with spaces when decoding.

Emoji and non English letters use several bytes each.

Background: what to know before you rely on it

Binary is the base two number system that digital hardware uses because a circuit can be on or off. A group of eight bits is a byte, and it can hold 256 values. Early text codes such as ASCII used one byte per English character. Unicode later gave every symbol in every language a number, and UTF8 became the common way to write those numbers as bytes. That is why a plain letter takes one byte while an emoji can take four.

Frequently asked questions

What is ASCII?

A set of 128 codes for English letters, digits and symbols. UTF8 includes it and adds all other languages.

Why are there eight digits per group?

One byte has eight bits.

Can I decode hex?

Yes. Paste pairs such as 48 65 6C 6C 6F.

Does it work offline?

Yes, after the page loads.
