Password Generator

Pick a length and character types and the generator makes strong random passwords with your browser's secure random number source.

What is password generator?

Weak and reused passwords are a leading cause of account takeovers. A long random password is far harder to guess than a word with a number added at the end.

This generator runs in your browser and uses the Web Crypto API. Nothing is sent over the internet and nothing is stored.

How to use the password generator

  1. Set the length. 16 or more is a good choice.
  2. Tick the character types you want.
  3. Press Calculate, copy a password and save it in a password manager.

How the password generator works

Each character is picked from the allowed set with an unbiased random draw. At least one character from every chosen type is included, then the order is shuffled. Strength is shown as bits of entropy, which is length times the base 2 logarithm of the character set size.

Worked example

A 16 character password using all four types has about 100 bits of entropy, which is far beyond what current attacks can guess.

Common uses of the password generator

  • Creating a new password for an account.
  • Making a Wifi key or a PIN like string.
  • Generating test data for developers.
  • Replacing old reused passwords with unique ones.
  • Producing passwords that meet a site's rules.

Tips and common mistakes

Use a password manager so you can have a different password for every site.

Turn on two factor authentication for email, banking and social accounts.

Background: what to know before you rely on it

Password strength is measured in bits of entropy, which is how many guesses an attacker would need on average. Each extra character makes a password exponentially harder to guess. A random 16 character password from 90 symbols has about 100 bits, far more than any realistic attack can crack. Humans are poor at randomness. We choose words, names and patterns that attackers try first. That is why random generated passwords are best, stored in a password manager. Add two factor authentication on important accounts, because the weakest link is often a leaked or phished password, not a guessed one. Never reuse passwords across sites.

Private, free and fast

This tool runs entirely in your browser. What you type or choose is not uploaded to a server and is not saved after you close the page, which keeps it fast and private. It is free to use as often as you like. See more in all generators, or browse the full list of tools.

Frequently asked questions

Is this password generator safe?

Yes. It runs in your browser and does not send data anywhere.

How long should a password be?

At least 14 to 16 characters.

Are symbols necessary?

Length matters more. Symbols help when a site asks for them.
