Random String and ID Generator

Choose a length, a character set and an optional prefix. The generator creates secure random strings you can use as IDs, codes or test tokens.

What is random string and id generator?

Random strings are used as identifiers, invite codes, short links, order numbers, temporary tokens and test data. A good generator makes sure every character is chosen without bias, so codes are hard to guess.

This tool uses your browser's secure random source. It shows roughly how many different values exist for your settings, so you can judge how likely a collision is.

How to use the random string and id generator

  1. Pick the character set that suits your use case.
  2. Set the length, number of IDs and an optional prefix such as order_ or inv_.
  3. Press Generate and copy the list.

How the random string and id generator works

Each character is selected with an unbiased random draw from the set you chose. The size of the space equals the number of characters raised to the power of the length, shown as a rough power of ten.

Worked example

Twelve characters from letters and numbers give about 3 times 10 to the power of 21 possible values, which is more than enough for most apps.

Common uses of the random string and id generator

  • Creating invite codes, coupon codes or order references.
  • Making placeholder API keys for documentation.
  • Generating test data for databases.
  • Creating short link slugs.
  • Building temporary file names.

Tips and common mistakes

Use at least 16 to 24 characters for secret tokens. Short codes are fine for public references but not for secrets.

For database primary keys, consider a UUID or a time ordered ID format instead of plain random text.

Background: what to know before you rely on it

Collision risk follows the birthday paradox. You might expect a code with a million possible values to be safe for a thousand records, but the chance that two match is already about 40 percent. Longer codes shrink the risk quickly. A twelve character alphanumeric code has so many values that the chance of a clash among millions of records is tiny. Also keep human readability in mind. If people must type a code, avoid look alike characters such as the letter O and the digit 0, and consider grouping characters with spaces or dashes. Never use a random string as a secret unless it is created with a secure source and is long enough.

Private, free and fast

This tool runs entirely in your browser. What you type or choose is not uploaded to a server and is not saved after you close the page, which keeps it fast and private. It is free to use as often as you like. See more in all name and id generators, or browse the full list of tools.

Frequently asked questions

Are the strings secure?

They use the Web Crypto random source, which is suitable for tokens. For production secrets, generate them on your server.

Can two IDs be the same?

It is possible but extremely unlikely at normal lengths.

What length should I choose?

12 for public codes and 24 or more for secret tokens.

Is this the same as a UUID?

No. A UUID has a fixed format. See the UUID generator.
