Pace Calculator

Enter your distance and time to get your pace per kilometer and per mile, your speed, and the time you would need for a 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon at that pace.

What is pace calculator?

Pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance, usually minutes per kilometer or per mile. Runners use it to set goals, plan races and track progress.

This calculator converts your time and distance into both paces and your speed, and shows the finish times for common race distances at the same pace.

How to use the pace calculator

  1. Enter the distance and choose kilometers or miles.
  2. Enter your time.
  3. Read your pace, speed and race predictions.

How the pace calculator works

Pace per kilometer equals total seconds divided by kilometers. Pace per mile equals the kilometer pace times 1.609344. Speed equals distance divided by time in hours. Race times equal the pace times the race distance.

Worked example

Running 10 km in 50 minutes is a pace of 5:00 per kilometer, 8:03 per mile and 12 km/h. At that pace a 5K takes 25 minutes.

Common uses of the pace calculator

  • Setting race goals.
  • Planning training runs.
  • Comparing runs on different distances.
  • Checking treadmill settings.
  • Pacing a charity run.

Tips and common mistakes

Real race times for longer distances are usually slower than a simple pace projection.

Use the pace in training to practice goal speed.

Background: what to know before you rely on it

Pace and speed describe the same thing in opposite ways. Speed is distance per time, while pace is time per distance, and runners prefer pace because it is easy to hold in the head. Pace strategy matters in races: starting too fast is the most common reason for slowing late. Even splits or a slightly faster second half usually give the best result. Heat, hills and wind change effort, so judge by effort as well as by the watch.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good running pace?

It depends on age, fitness and goals. Improvement over time matters more.

How do I convert min per km to min per mile?

Multiply by 1.609.

What is a marathon distance?

Can I use it for cycling?

The speed result is useful, but pace is mainly a running measure.
