Image Color Picker

Choose an image and the tool finds its six most common colors, shows them as swatches with HEX codes and tells you how much of the image each covers.

What is image color picker?

Designers often want a palette that matches a photo, a logo or a product. This tool reads the pixels of your image and groups similar colors to find the main ones.

Each color comes with a HEX code and the share of the image it covers, so you can copy it straight into a design.

How to use the image color picker

  1. Choose your image.
  2. Press Find colors.
  3. Copy the HEX codes you want.

How the image color picker works

The image is scaled down and every pixel is placed in a color bucket. Buckets are ranked by pixel count, averaged to get a true color and filtered so that the final colors are clearly different from each other.

Worked example

A sunset photo may give deep blue, orange, pink, dark gray and cream, with the sky color covering the largest share.

Common uses of the image color picker

  • Matching a website to a logo.
  • Building a palette from a photo.
  • Finding brand colors from packaging.
  • Decorating and mood boards.
  • Checking color balance in images.

Tips and common mistakes

Use the colors as a starting point and adjust for contrast.

Crop the image to the object first if you want the colors of just that object.

Background: what to know before you rely on it

Dominant color extraction is a simple form of color quantization, the process of reducing millions of colors to a few that represent the picture. Photographers and designers use it to build palettes and to make interface elements that feel connected to an image, such as a card background that picks up the main tone of a cover photo. Averages can look duller than the colors you see, because real photos mix many shades, so always adjust saturation by eye.

Private, free and fast

This tool runs entirely in your browser. What you type or choose is not uploaded to a server and is not saved after you close the page, which keeps it fast and private. It is free to use as often as you like. See more in all image tools, or browse the full list of tools.
