Tip Calculator

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage to get the tip, add it to the bill, then divide by the number of people. This calculator does all of it at once.

What is tip calculator?

Tipping customs differ by country, and splitting a bill is awkward when you are also doing math. This calculator shows the tip, the total and each person's share in one step.

In the United States and Canada, 15 to 20 percent is common in restaurants. In many other countries a service charge is already included, or a small round up is enough.

How to use the tip calculator

  1. Enter the bill before tip.
  2. Set the tip percentage. Common choices are 15, 18 and 20.
  3. Enter how many people share the bill. The result updates as you type.

How the tip calculator works

Tip equals bill times tip percent divided by 100. Total is bill plus tip. Each share is the total divided by the number of people. Results are shown to two decimal places.

Worked example

On a bill of 84.50 with an 18 percent tip, the tip is 15.21 and the total is 99.71. Split between two people, each pays 49.86.

Common uses of the tip calculator

  • Splitting a restaurant bill fairly between friends.
  • Checking local tipping norms when you travel.
  • Calculating a tip on a taxi, delivery or salon service.
  • Adding a thank you tip for a service provider.
  • Teaching children percentages with a real example.

Tips and common mistakes

Check whether the bill already includes a service charge before you add a tip.

If tax is shown on the bill, many people tip on the pre tax amount. Enter that amount in the bill field.

Background: what to know before you rely on it

Tipping customs vary widely. In the United States a restaurant tip of 15 to 20 percent is the norm because servers rely on tips for a large part of their pay. In Japan tipping is not expected and can cause confusion. Across much of Europe a service charge may already be included, and rounding up the bill is enough. In the Gulf region and parts of Asia, a service charge is often on the bill, with a small extra tip for good service. When in doubt, read the bill, ask a local and tip on the pre tax amount if you are unsure. A quick way to find ten percent is to move the decimal point one place to the left.
