GPA Calculator

Enter each course as a letter grade and its credit hours. The calculator multiplies grade points by credits and divides by total credits to give your GPA.

What is gpa calculator?

Grade point average summarizes your grades in one number on a four point scale. Schools use it for honors, scholarships and admissions, so knowing yours is useful.

This tool supports plus and minus grades. List each course on its own line with the letter grade, a comma and the credits.

How to use the gpa calculator

  1. Type each course as a grade and credits, for example B+, 4.
  2. Add all your courses, one per line.
  3. Read your GPA, total credits and quality points.

How the gpa calculator works

Each letter grade maps to grade points: A is 4.0, A minus 3.7, B plus 3.3, B 3.0 and so on down to F at 0. Quality points equal grade points times credits. GPA equals total quality points divided by total credits.

Worked example

A in a 3 credit course gives 12 points. B plus in a 4 credit course gives 13.2. A minus in 3 credits gives 11.1. B in 2 credits gives 6. The total is 42.3 points over 12 credits, so the GPA is 3.53.

Common uses of the gpa calculator

  • Tracking your GPA during a semester.
  • Planning grades needed to reach a target GPA.
  • Checking eligibility for honors or scholarships.
  • Preparing college or job applications.
  • Helping a student understand how credits affect GPA.

Tips and common mistakes

Check your school's scale. Some schools do not give A plus extra points or use a different scale.

To plan ahead, add the courses you expect with the grades you aim for and see the new GPA.

Background: what to know before you rely on it

The grade point system became common in American schools in the twentieth century. It lets different courses be combined into one figure, with credit hours giving more weight to larger courses. Details vary: some schools add extra points for honors or advanced courses, and many universities outside the United States use different scales altogether. Admissions offices often recalculate GPA using their own rules, so treat any calculator result as an estimate. GPA is just one factor. Course difficulty, trends over time, test scores and activities also matter to many programs.
