What is secret santa generator?

Secret Santa is a gift exchange where each person is assigned someone else to buy a gift for, and keeps it secret until the day. A fair draw means nobody gets their own name and no one is left out.

This generator makes a random draw that follows your rules and can keep couples or housemates from drawing each other.

How to use the secret santa generator

  1. Type each participant on a new line.
  2. Add pairs who should not be matched, one pair per line.
  3. Press Draw and send each person their match privately.

How the secret santa generator works

The tool shuffles the names and checks that nobody draws themselves or an excluded person. If a shuffle breaks a rule, it tries again up to 2,000 times. If no draw exists, it tells you the rules are too strict. The draw uses the secure random generator of your browser.

Worked example

With six names and one excluded pair, the tool returns a list such as Amir gives to Diana, and Diana gives to Fatima, with every person giving and receiving exactly once.

Common uses of the secret santa generator

Tips and common mistakes

Agree on a price limit before you draw.

Send each match privately by message.

Background: what to know before you rely on it

A valid Secret Santa assignment is a type of mathematical arrangement called a derangement, where no item stays in its own place. For a group of n people, roughly 37 percent of random shuffles are valid, which is why simple retry works well for most groups. Adding exclusion rules reduces the number of valid arrangements, and with very strict rules there may be none. The organizer should always keep the list private, since showing it to the group spoils the surprise.
