Fancy Text, Symbols and Invisible Characters: How Unicode Makes Them Work

Fancy fonts and symbols are not real fonts. They are Unicode characters that look different. Here is how they work and where they can cause trouble.

Why fancy text works

Unicode includes sets of letters drawn in bold, italic, script and other styles, mainly for math and special writing. A generator swaps normal letters for those look alike characters. Because they are text, you can paste them almost anywhere. Try the Fancy Text Generator.

Symbols

Stars, hearts, arrows and check marks are also Unicode characters. Copy them from the Symbols Copy and Paste page, and paste them into bios, documents and messages. How they look depends on the font of the app where you paste them.

Invisible characters

Some characters show as blank space, such as the Braille blank or the Hangul filler. They are used for spacing in bios and names. Copy them from the Invisible Character Copy and Paste page. Some apps remove them.

Where it can go wrong

  • Screen readers may read fancy letters one by one or skip them, so avoid them for important text.
  • Search engines may not match fancy letters to normal words, so do not use them in titles you want to rank.
  • Some apps show empty boxes if the font lacks a character.

Use fancy text for decoration, and keep key information in plain text.
