What is name combiner?

A name combiner merges the start of one name with the end of another to make a new name. People use it for couple names, fandom ship names, baby names, pet names, team names and brand ideas.

This tool tries every split point of both names, throws out clumsy results and ranks the rest so the smoothest blends come first.

How to use the name combiner

  1. Enter two names.
  2. Choose how many results you want.
  3. Press Combine and pick the blends you like.

How the name combiner works

For every split point, the first part of name A is joined to the last part of name B, and the same is done in reverse. Each result is scored higher when the join alternates consonants and vowels, when the length is close to the average of the two names, and when it keeps some letters of both names. Duplicates and results with very long repeated letters are removed.

Worked example

Alex and Jordan can blend into names like Aledan, Jolex or Jorex, shown in order of how smooth they sound.

Tips and common mistakes

Try both orders of the names. The tool already mixes them, but you may prefer one.

Say each name out loud. Pick one that is easy to pronounce.

Check that your blend is not an unintended word in another language.

Background: what to know before you rely on it

Blends of two words are called portmanteaus, a term coined by Lewis Carroll for words like chortle and brunch. Couple names such as the mixes made famous by magazines work the same way. The blends that sound best usually join a consonant to a vowel at the seam, keep stress on the first part and have two or three syllables. A tool can propose many, but taste decides, so use the list as a starting point.
