What is currency converter?
A currency converter tells you how much one currency is worth in another. Rates change every day, so the tool loads the latest rate when you use it instead of showing a fixed table.
It covers 35 major currencies, including the US dollar, the euro, the pound, the Canadian and Australian dollars, the Gulf currencies and the Indian rupee.
How to use the currency converter
- Enter the amount.
- Choose the currency you have and the currency you want.
- Read the result, the rate and the list of other popular currencies.
How the currency converter works
The tool requests the current rates for your base currency from a public exchange rate service. The result equals the amount times the rate for the target currency. The inverse rate is one divided by that rate. Rates are cached in your browser for six hours to reduce requests.
Worked example
Common uses of the currency converter
- Checking the price of an online purchase in your own currency.
- Planning a trip to London, Tokyo or Istanbul.
- Comparing a salary offer in another currency.
- Estimating remittance amounts.
- Quoting clients in their own currency.
Tips and common mistakes
Banks, exchange shops and money transfer apps add a margin, so you will get a slightly worse rate than the one shown.
For large transfers, compare the final amount received, not just the advertised rate.
Background: what to know before you rely on it
Exchange rates show the price of one currency in terms of another, and they move because of interest rates, trade, inflation, political news and demand. The mid market rate is the midpoint between what buyers and sellers will pay at a given moment, and it is the fairest benchmark. Retail rates add a spread. This converter gives a reference value for planning and not a quote you can trade at.
Private, free and fast
This tool fetches public exchange rates from Exchange Rate API when you use it. The amount you type is calculated in your browser and is not sent anywhere. It is free to use as often as you like. See more in all finance calculators, or browse the full list of tools.
